The local government officials recognized that about 80% of Metro Cebu’s air pollution is generated by vehicles. To combat air pollution, a “car-less day” was proposed as part of the city’s annual celebration of Clean Air Month every November. In addition, the Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) worked on acquiring better air monitoring systems to detect vehicle carbon emissions. Every vehicle is also required to undergo regular emission tests.

To enhance the City Ordinance No. 2343 regarding banning businesses from using plastic bags every Wednesday and Saturday, the local government of Cebu also banned single-use plastic production and usage. No one is allowed to use plastic bags, straws, cups, plates, and the like , which further boosts sustainability efforts.

Cooperation For “Mega Cebu”

Like any rapidly growing urban area, Cebu faces challenges when it comes to flooding, wastewater management, insufficient water supply, high traffic, and environmental degradation. To respond to these challenges, the Metro Cebu Development and Coordinating Board (MCDCB) spearheaded programs for the sustainable urban development of Cebu. 

Cebu is envisioned to be a megacity by 2050. The program’s roadmap involves collaboration between the region’s government units, private sector, and NGOs to gear towards a more sustainable city.

Simply put, Mega Cebu encompasses every aspect of sustainability — from eco-tourism, pedestrian development, better transportation and road links, safe and water supply through more dams, integrated drainage systems, wastewater treatment, solid waste management, natural resource preservation, natural disaster planning, to green building practices.

Given the ongoing program of Mega Cebu, real estate assets in the area are expected to reap the long-term sustainability benefits.
