4 Nature-Based Activities in Batangas for the Whole Family

What are some nature-based activities in Batangas?

  1. Hiking up Batangas’ Many Mountains
  2. Camping on Fortune Island
  3. Relaxing by the Beach Side
  4. Diving in Anilao

Those living in Manila travel to Batangas for a quick escape from the busy city. Despite it being a growing metropolis, Batangas is still home to many natural landscapes that are waiting to be explored. Beaches, hiking trails, and diving spots await locals looking to immerse themselves in nature. This article rounds up some of the best nature-based activities in Batangas City. Whether you’re living in Batangas or Metro Manila, these spots provide you with the quick escape you need from fast-paced urban life.

Hiking up Batangas’ Many Mountains

Hiking up Batangas’ Many Mountains

Batangas is filled with beautiful mountains that are waiting to be explored by both locals and tourists. Hiking up these trails exposes you to the breathtaking view of the province.

There are hiking trails for beginners and professionals. There are many local guides to assist you as you embark on this journey.

Mt. Gulugod Baboy

This is one of the beginner-friendly mountain trails located in Mabini, Batangas. Its name directly translates to “pig’s spine”. Its name is such because the mountain’s peak does resemble the back of a pig. Many choose this trail for its views (which are especially beautiful at sunset!).

There are three peaks on this mountain: Gulugod Baboy, Gitna, and Pinagbanderahan. The highest of the three is Pinagbanderahan — whose name is derived from the Tagalog word bandera, flag in English. All three peaks give you a 360-degree view of Batangas’ gorgeous hills, mountains, and bays.

Mt. Batulao

This is an inactive volcano located in Nasugbu, Batangas. Just like other peaks in the city, it offers you incredible views of the province’s landscape. Hikers can expect moderately steep terrain with rolling hills — perfect for families and beginner hikers. The trails on this mountain are well-established, making it one of the easiest trails in the province.

Its name originates from the Tagalog word Batong Dilaw which translates to yellow stain. Local guides say that the side of the mountain appears yellow when the early morning sun hits it.

Mt. Maculo

Mt. Maculo welcomes hikers of all levels. This mountain is located in Cuenca, Batangas, and has three destinations to explore: Rockies, Summit, and the Grotto. Many hikers visit the Rockies because of its picture-perfect landscape. There, you are granted a majestic view of Taal Lake.

The trail of Mt. Maculo can be enjoyed by both beginners and thrill seekers. The hike to the Rockies can take one to three hours, depending on your pacing. Experienced climbers can enjoy the hike to the summit. Its terrain is steep, but the lush greenery around you relaxes you as you hike.

Camping on Fortune Island

Camping on Fortune Island

Batangas is famous for its many beaches, but Fortune Island provides you with a unique escape. This island is an abandoned luxury resort with a history of misfortune. However, there is nothing unfortunate about the nature you experience here.

To get here, you will need to take a boat from Nasugbu. Once you land on Fortune Island, you’re greeted with crystal water and white beaches. Many choose to camp here, but there are also huts for rent.

There are many activities you enjoy on the island like swimming and scuba diving. What catches the eye of many tourists are the iconic Grecian pillar ruins overlooking the Pacific Ocean. These are the remnants of the once-luxurious resort. Many explore the site before relaxing and camping on the island.

Relaxing by the Beach Side

Relaxing by the Beach Side

Aside from Fortune Island, there are other beaches enjoyed by locals and city dwellers. You can enjoy this for a quick weekend getaway or a short vacation.

Laiya, Batangas

The beaches of Laiya are visited often by many. There is a mix of budget-friendly and luxury resorts for you to choose from. Many choose to enjoy beaches here because of its white sand beach. There are also many water sports offered by resorts here for the whole family to enjoy.

Masasa Beach

Just like Fortune Island, this beach requires locals to travel by boat. Masasa Beach is located in Tingloy, Batangas, a municipality not found on the main island. It’s perfect for those who enjoy the off-beaten track.

Compared to Laiya, its sand isn’t white or pearly, but guests are sure to enjoy crystal clear waters and vibrant waves. Guests can enjoy and relax by the beach, snorkel, and even go island hopping.

Diving in Anilao

Diving in Anilao

Since the 1970s, many have been going to Anilao, Batangas for diving. There are many kinds of diving sports like scuba diving, muck dives, and blackwater diving.

There are many trained and experienced dive guides in Anilao, ready to assist you in discovering the creatures of the ocean. Anilao is also known to have large marine life. You can see turtles and sea turtles on some dives. You can also admire the unique soft coral forests here.
