Awarded For Being A Leaders In The Field Of Sustainable Urban Development

Batangas City is maintaining the image  as a  very livable and happy community. The harmony between the diverse economic activity and the environmental protection that has been a thrust and continuously promoted by leaders has always been evident in every effort of the local government.

This being said, Batangas City has been awarded multiple times for being at the top of sustainable efforts. Just last October 2020, Batangas City was hailed as the World’s Most Lovable City and overall winner of the We Love Cities campaign initiated by the World Wide Fund (WWF).

The public engagement campaign is interwoven with the One Planet City Challenge (OOPC) and stemmed from the recognition that over half of the world’s population living in cities generate over 70% climate footprint. It aimed to support sustainable urban development through awareness and contribute to a healthier planet through green buildings, better transportation, reducing waste, and harnessing the power of nature in a climate-friendly way.

Back in 2017, the Environment-Friendly Award in the roster of Model Cities from the Manila Times was also bagged by Batangas City for prioritizing the well-being of the environment. The locale is seen to constantly promote love and respect for the environment by implementing programs and projects that protect, preserve and conserve natural resources.

Batangas City is continuously pushing its environmental sustainability efforts. In fact, its local leaders stated that Batangas City aims to be the first carbon-neutral city in the Philippines by 2030 and has developed comprehensive climate mitigation and adaptation plan to realize the said vision.

In an era where environmental consequences are plaguing societies, moving to Batangas City proves to be an ideal option for families who want to reap an economical and healthier lifestyle.

National Environmental Laws Are Being Enforced

National Environmental Laws Are Being Enforced

Batangas City is blessed with rich biodiversity marked with vibrant marine life, diverse plant life, and natural spots such as mountains, oceans, falls, creeks, forests, and rivers.

Because of its  rich biodiversity, economic activities have increased to fuel the city’s growth. Thus, a challenge to maximize and preserve natural resources has become the priority of the city’s leaders. An example of the area currently being protected in Batangas City is the Verde Island Passage, which is recognized at the “Center of the Center of Marine Shorefish Biodiversity”.

Batangas City formulated and implemented its own Environment Code known as the ”E-Code of Batangas City”. Ordinated back in 2010, the act contains environmental provisions on policies, programs, regulations, and penalties for violations of the environmental protection and management plan of the city. It contains 24 articles with 176 sections that encompass every aspect of sustainability — from land resources and conservation areas, green building, energy conservation, water conservation, regulating pollutants, wildlife and freshwater resources, waste management, air quality, to business environmental impacts.

Buildings have to be built with green materials, areas prone to geologic hazards and florals are preserved, eco-industrial parks are being built, forest cutting and occupation of forest lands are prohibited, water bodies are being maintained, wide-scale tree planting activities are encouraged, solar energy is promoted, and many more.

Incentives Are Offered For Green Initiatives

The local government of Batangas City recognizes that their objectives for environmental sustainability can only be achieved through a unified action among its communities. The people need to join hands with the leaders to push efforts in the protection and conservation of natural resources. For this reason, there are several incentives offered for those who have green initiatives.

For example, to further boost the collaborative efforts between the state and the private sector in the fight against climate change, there is an award for businesses that practice environmental initiatives called the “Most Eco-Friendly Business District accolade” as well as monetary prizes of up to P100,000. This is just one of the many actions of Batangas City to promote environmental practices among its communities.
